Image Description: This is a vivid and up-close picture of seven strobiles – or conifer cones – and we can see every tiny detail. A couple of these cones have opened up; as they dry out they will release their seeds. Pine and other woody tree cones are characterized by botanists as strobili because of the central axis and cone scales. Because the photographer chose to put seven cones in the picture, it is suggested that they knew that seven was the number of the natural world; for example, there are seven directions of movement: right, left, down, up, back, forward, and center. Humans are comfortable with the number seven on other levels; it is very common 'lucky' number, there are seven days in the week, seven notes on the musical scale, and even in the Christian religion, Genesis suggests the world was created in seven days.
