Image Description: Identifying this fish’s species is difficult, but there is no question that it is a so-called “crampfish” - a ray with the ability to deliver a harsh electric shock. These rays come in a variety of sizes, but their body type is almost always the same, featuring unbelievable flatness, top-set eyes, and a long tail that can be used to deliver that electric charge to potential threats, humans included. Like the ray who took the life of Steve Irwin, this one isn’t likely to use its ability to shock unless it feels particularly threatened, but that doesn’t make them safe to play with; one wrong move is all it takes for any crampfish to quickly generate the electricity it needs to deliver a shock and quickly swim to safety.
