View on one side of Statue of Liberty - Royalty free photo

image name

Image Description: view on one of the sides of Statue of Liberty on Liberty Island. A side far away view of the Statue of liberty with construction happening at the base. She was designed by Frederic Bartholdi and dedicated to the United States on October 28th, 1886. The head and torch-bearing arm were built first and on display for almost ten years before the body of the statue was finished. The rest of the the statue was designed and built in France, put into crates, and then shipped to New York to be put together and attached to a pedestal on what was known as Bedloe's Island at the time. Construction of this pedestal caused some trouble, even coming close to being canceled due to lack of funds; there were almost 120,000 contributors, but most gave less than one dollar. There have been many repairs and safety upgrades to the statue over the years; it is currently closed to the public, but is due to reopen July 4th, 2013.
