It was named after it's engineer Gustave Eiffel, and was erected in 1889 as the entrance arch to the 1889 World's Fair. This iconic iron lattice giant stands 320 meters tall; which is about as high as an 81 story building and it weighs in at a hefty 7,300 tons of wrought iron. The Eiffel Tower is the most visited paid monument in the world - 7.1 million people visited the Eiffel Tower in 2011 alone!
