Moulin Rouge has been open since October 6, 1889, and its aim at the time of opening was to allow the very rich to come and 'slum it' in a upcoming fashionable district. It was a hit as soon as the doors opened in Jardin de Paris, right at the foot of the Montmartre hill, by its creator Joseph Oller. Moulin Rouge had an extravagant atmosphere and was known as the birthplace of of the modern can-can dance, eventually leading to the introduction of cabarets across Europe. It also became known as the 'first palace of women' and allowed people from all walks of life to rub shoulders.
