Image Description: These ancient Egyptian sarcophagi were built very specifically for the person buried inside and, when they were carved, they would have been done so with representations of the deceased so that each one is unique and highly detailed. The elaborate detail put into the design was also because the sarcophagus was normally built to be freestanding and to remain above ground to view. A sarcophagus often formed the outer layer of protection for a royal mummy; they usually held several layers of coffins inside. The word sarcophagus has Greek origins; sarx meaning 'flesh' and phagein meaning 'to eat'. This has meaning because the particular kind of limestone they was typically carved from was thought to decompose the flesh held within.
