Image Description: This lioness looks to be in mid-roar about something that's irritating her. While we tend to think of male lions as the king of the jungle, it is actually both the male and the female that defend against intruders. A few traits that the lioness has up on her male counterpart is that she is swifter, smaller, and more agile; she is also free of a heavy and sweaty mane which causes the male to overheat during exertion. While the lionesses do much of the hunting, that will not prevent the males from taking over if they are close by. When a lioness is ready to mate, she will do so with more than one male, and often; twenty to forty times a day with no time to stop and eat! This fact means that lions will often reproduce very well in captivity.
