Koshering salt is very common nowadays, and it produces a much larger size of grain than a regular table salt; although it is still made from same chemical compound: sodium chloride. Unlike most table salt, kosher salt is usually additive-free and contains no iodine. The name kosher salt comes from its use in removing surface blood from meats in order to make them kosher, and not from it being made as a kosher food; nearly all salt varieties are naturally a kosher food in respect to the Torah. While kosher salt can be used in any food, it is not usually recommended in baking as the grains will not always dissolve properly, and small bits of salt can remain in the finished dish.
