Yoga mats are more of a new age exercise accessory, and did not become common until the mid 1980s when a German yoga teacher, Angela Farmer, used a towel-sized piece of carpet underlay for her practice. Her father, Richard Farmer, contacted the the carpet manufacturer, and he became the first retailer of 'sticky mats'. Now, yoga or exercise mats are very common in helping against hand and foot slippage during asana practice; this reduces the risk of injury, and some insurance companies even require them to be used to be eligible for coverage. Yoga mats are usually 72” long and 24” wide, their thickness ranges from 2-5 mm, and they are available in a wide range of patterns and colors.
