Image Description: This detailed image of a great white pelican shows us an up-close view of the pelican's skin. A great white pelican like this one can grow up to nearly six feet long, with a wingspan of up to nearly ten feet! While this guy is among the heaviest flying birds on Earth, he still will only weigh at about 24 lbs at most; they look bigger than they are because of special air pockets in their skeleton and under their skin to help them float. These pelicans eat mainly fish, but occasionally will nibble on crustaceans, amphibians, turtles, and even other birds. Great white pelicans can live to be close to 25 years old in the wild, with the potential for more than 50 years of life in some forms of captivity.
