The hawthorn tree’s name means “thorny hedge” and this hedge of thorns was planted in abundance after the 1845 General Enclosures Act was passed in Britain, irritating the locals who once could freely roam into whatever land they wished. The hawthorn tree and berries offer many health benefits, although many cautions should be taken. The hawthorn berry can be used to treat childhood diabetes, and it’s also one of the best tonics for hearts, can lower blood pressure, be made into jams and jellies, and when dried and crushed can help with diarrhea and kidney problems. The hawthorn’s leaves have even been used as tobacco cessation aids for people addicted to cigarettes.
