The modern bears we are familiar with have short tails, big bodies with stocky legs, shaggy hair and a long snouts. Bears have an excellent sense of smell and, despite looking clumsy, they are in fact very agile; they easily climb trees, swim quickly, and can run with uncanny speed when necessary. There are eight bear species, with no less than six of those listed as endangered. Bears have been hunted for their fur and meat around the world, and even for their bile in Asia, since prehistoric times, and their habitats are under pressure even today by developing areas. The illegal poaching and trade of bears and their parts is also an ongoing threat; it is prohibited but almost impossible to enforce.
