Image Description: This silver arawana fish has a long body, large scales, and it can grow up to 35 inches! This species is found in the Amazon River basin, Guyana, and a few other areas of South America. They seem to have a grumpy face as their lips turn down in a grouchy looking way. Arawanas have also been called 'monkey fish' because they have a tendency to jump out of the water and snap up prey. Because of this habit, when keeping a silver arawana in an aquarium, it should have a tightly fitting cover as they have been known to attack hands above their tanks. As well, to keep a fish this large comfortable, it should be kept in at least a tank of 300 gallons and the aquarium should always be wider and taller than the arawana to avoid deformities.
